Musical Director/ organist needed

Director of Music with organ and piano skills required following the retirement of previous postholder. Sunday worship is normally a Common Worship eucharist at 10am or an All Age worship service on the 3rd Sunday.

St Thomas’ is in a fantastic location in a mixed residential area close to the hub of York and York St John University. It is a friendly, growing community of Christian people who aim to serve God in their local area. St Thomas’ is small enough for members to feel welcomed and make friends, but it also has a lovely mix of people of diverse ages and backgrounds.

We have a long musical heritage and choral tradition which we are seeking to develop in the light of current trends in the makeup of the parish and congregation. Services currently include traditional hymns as well as modern songs, and we wish to expand our repertoire. At the All Age service we make particular use of methods and styles aimed at engaging both children and older members. As well as using hymns, each service contains one extended time of worship led by a small group of instrumentalists (currently piano, flute, violin and trumpet). Parts need to be arranged for this group of players. We wish to appoint a person with a breadth of experience who would bring fresh ideas to our music. It is hoped that the successful applicant will wish to become an active member of our congregation.

We have strong links with local schools, with the University of York St John and with other bodies in the parish. We are working to develop our mission and impact in the wider community.

There is a small renumeration for this appointment and the benefit of fees for weddings and funerals if the appointed person is available for these.

2 references must be supplied. If you have been a musical director or assisted in worship at another church, one reference must be from the leader of that church.
The successful applicant will be required to undertake a CRB check.

The initial appointment will be for a trial period of 6 months.
